Adams was born to an U.S. Army officer in Italy and was raised in Castle Rock Colorado. Mid-1990s, she started dancing and performing professionally at Boulder's Dinner Theatre in Colorado and Country Dinner Playhouse. Later, in Minnesota, at a local theatre, she was a chosen to be a part of a mock film documentary on beauty pageants titled Drop Dead Gorgeous. She moved from Minnesota to Los Angeles after making her debut as the snarky but good-natured contestant. She was married to Tony Curtis was her partner from June 1950 until September 1992. Her children included, Kelly Curtis as well as Jamie Lee Curtis. Leigh, discovered through actress Norma Shearer Leigh signed a contract with MGM to launch her film career star in the late 1940s. Leigh was a star in a variety of films that became popular over the following decade, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho (from 1960) and Living It Up (1954) with Martin Lewis.
